Julia, Rita, Trish, Sue, Karen
Route: Ufford/ Orford/ Tunstall via cycle route/Ufford
Mileage: Approx 34, more for some, less for others.
On a stunning Sunday (Mother's Day) we set off from Ufford to Orford. Sue cleverly masterminded a plan that included coming via mine early, so she could sit and have a coffee and read the papers before continuing. A very nice start to Mother's Day!
The forecast was so good that Rita and Trish had their cycling shorts on - the first bare legs of the year! I did notice some alarmed looking drivers though. We set off for Orford which is becoming a favourite route. The road surface was good so we got quite a nice pace going, as we were not constantly looking for potholes. On arrival at the coffee shop we came across what I initially thought was a miniature black piglet on a lead, (would that be NFS as in 'normal for Suffolk'?) but on closer inspection after taking off my sunglasses, it turned out to be a miniature bull terrier puppy which was about the size of a large rat. Having now visited Orford several times, I have decided it is a dog mecca, a sort of Crufts on Sea, as we must have now seen just about every dog variety there is. Well small variety anyway, as I also think there is some sort of 'Small Dog Size Only Rule' in the village.
Trish and I have decided it would be a good idea to have a bike mechanics night, as not many of the group can actually change an inner tube, (and one member who shall remain nameless reckons she can't even pump up her tyres) so a mechanics night is currently being organised, for a few weeks time.
Ed, (Trish's husband ) and Andrew will be doing the demo, with all ladies having to change their back tyre. I might even add in a glass of wine for anyone who manages to get the back tyre back on without getting covered in oil and who remembers to close the brake block. Me included. There is of course no way I am changing anyone else's tyre if they get a puncture - my nails are way too precious for that! Being a generous person though, I will supply the disposable gloves and lots of er encouragement ('get a move on').
Having just had my Ride Leader Training with Breeze, they also said we should not fiddle with other peoples bikes (yay!!) in case we damage them so I now have a bona fida excuse to protect my nails. Talking of nails, there is now a new craze sweeping through the group. First me, then Trish, then Debbie, and then Sue, all getting our nails done. We are becoming more beautiful by the week :) I wonder who will be next on the nail list?
The logo for our new club jerseys is being finalized and hopefully the order will be in by the end of the week. Sue was sporting her Cycle Cuba Jersey today and looked VERY smart.
Just as I was nearing home, I came across another lady cyclist. Somehow we got chatting as one does and it turned out she is none other than Lucy the organizer of Suffolk Sunrise. That is another one added to the group! I am seriously thinking of splitting the group into speed levels on days when we have quite a few ladies. I think the faster ones will prefer getting a move on, and the more leisurely ones can enjoy the ride without me constantly trying to herd them up! Evening rides will shortly be commencing too..... by next week you will all have details.
Averill and Andrea, despite not being able to make the rides, have been keeping it up, with some highly impressive long cycles. Andrea cycled to SOUTHWOLD on Saturday (and nearly back) which is a looooooooong way!! Brilliant stuff! She summoned her back up vehicle after 40 miles - very sensible I reckon. And Averill did a great long ride too, even going on the ferry! (that does not count towards your mileage thought Av).
More next week......
